After years of pioneering the development of carbon rims, we understand what it takes to create the best carbon wheels. First, we start by understanding what the needs are for each type of rim we are building. There is no such thing as ‘one composite fits all’ approach here at Reynolds. We identify the crucial stress zones for each type of carbon rim family and engineer from there. When it comes time to layup a carbon rim, we utilize only the highest grade materials that meet our strict specifications for assembly in our own facilities. Our continued focus on creating the best carbon fiber wheels on the market has given us the confidence to offer a Lifetime Warranty.

CARBON RIMS

The engineers at Reynolds specify the exact carbon fiber construction for each section of a given rim to meet the demands that riders will place on them. They employ hybrid modulus laminates with variable chemistry resins to obtain the optimal balance of strength, weight and overall ride quality to produce the best rim for each predetermined purpose.

Reynolds identifies six individual sections of the rim structure, building in strength where it is needed and saving weight wherever possible, all in the name of optimizing performance. The spoke face and nipple bed are the points that translate torque from the hub to the outer diameter of the wheel and must therefore be incredibly robust. The sidewall of the rim tends not to incur such heavy loads and can therefore be a place to find weight savings. The tire channel and rim bead must tolerate not only tire pressures, but also crushing forces from impact. And the brake track area in the case of rim brakes, must also contend with the added pressure and heat from hard and extended braking.

MR5 is the moniker given to the construction of Reynolds Blacklabel mountain bike rims. Clearly, these rims must stand up to considerable abuse, so the spoke face, nipple bed, sidewall, tire channel and rim bead are all considered both individually and as a holistic system to balance strength, durability, weight and ride quality.

AERO VERSATILITY

Our AERO rim profiles are designed using our Dispersive Effect Termination™ technology complemented with additional features to offer the most versatile, aerodynamic wheels on the market. Our Dispersive Effect Termination™ airfoil rim design smooths turbulent airflow and creates a more stable ride while reducing aerodynamic drag. Wind tunnel testing confirms that our DET™ profile optimizations near the leading edge and spoke face minimize drag inducing fluid separation from the rim surface. The profile shapes provide a drag reduction of 4-5 Watts over our previous AERO wheels at apparent wind speeds approaching 30 kph, and also generate a more even pressure distribution over the entire rim surface. This yields increased stability over a wider range of riding conditions, translating to lower steering input and enhanced crosswind performance.

A further advantage of the current rim profiles is their tire option versatility. They are designed to accommodate larger tires without degrading aerodynamic performance. The 19mm wide tubeless ready tire channels and optimized rim shapes result in nearly identical lift/drag numbers whether using 23c or 25c tires. Riders are free to choose tires for lowest rolling resistance and their own preferred ride quality, and still enjoy all the aerodynamic benefits the rims offer. Our precision Reynolds designed hubs provide excellent lateral stiffness for better control, crisp acceleration and improved durability. The center lock rotor models offer supreme braking modulation and power in all conditions, and the High Tg resin brake tracks in the rim brake versions provide industry leading brake heat management for better braking consistency and confidence. The durable bearings roll smoothly adding to the superior ride quality of these amazingly versatile AERO wheels.

BRAKE WEAR INDICATOR

The Brake Wear Indicator is a 10mm wide red line that Reynolds embeds into the brake track. The strip, centered adjacent the valve stem hole on both sides of the rim, becomes visible only when excessive wear has occurred, thus indicating that the wheel should be retired from service.
