CR6 (Carbon Rim 6) is the precise method of assigning different carbon fiber and lay-ups to6 rim regions.

CTg stands for Cryogenic Glass Transition, a patented braking system developed by Reynolds.

The two components are Reynolds' proprietary Cryo-Blue Power polymer brake pads and hybrid carbon-fiber laminate (CTg brake track). With CTg, braking temperatures are 100*F (38*C) cooler than with other technologies.

BWI stands for Brake Wear Indicator. It is a 10mm wide red line that Reynolds embeds into the brake track.

The indicator, centered over the valve hole on both sides of the rim, becomes visible when excessive wear has occurred to indicate that the wheel needs replacing.

DET smoothes turbulent, excited, energized airflow and re-attaches it to the aerodynamic surface, effectively reducing aerodynamic drag. DET is Reynolds’ superior aerodynamic technology used on RZR 92 and all AERO wheels.

ISH is a “step” contour at the outer perimeter of the clincher hook that helps create a predictable airflow over the surface of the rim. It also increases the lateral stiffness of the wheel. ISH is used on 46 AERO, 58 AERO, and 72 AERO.

ProCycling Magazine - WHEN WE RODE the Aero 58 from Reynolds exactly a year ago, we were surprised and seriously impressed by the performance. The range already included two deeper options (72 and 90mm) and now there’s a shallower version for riders looking for a lighter set of all-rounders.

Why 46mm? Aside from being a close rival to existing leaders such as the Zipp 303 and Enve 3.4, Reynolds call this their signature rim depth.

 As with the other models in the Aero range, the 46 is available as both a clincher and tubular and it has its own rim profile developed specifically for its depth. What all the wheels share is the Dispersive Effect Termination concept that underpins the characteristic shape. The Aero range wheels are wide at the brake track, stay wide until their midpoint, then taper in to a narrow point at the spoke bed. Reynolds say that this hybrid shape and the exact taper gives excellent aerodynamic performance in terms of both speed and stability.

The 46 is decently light, if not truly feather-like, for a clincher at 1,486g but they feel lighter because, just like its 58 sibling, the lateral stiffness is immense. As a result, climbing, acceleration and cornering are all given a boost, especially if you’re a bigger rider or a sprinter. The stability is fantastic, too. In strong crosswinds on exposed roads you barely feel a nudge.

It’s very hard to gauge the aero speed of a wheelset by feel but based on many hundreds of miles on these wheels and their rivals, and using a power meter, I’m confident to say that they’re up with the

aforementioned Zipps and Enves for pure pace. A wind tunnel may find some small differences but on the road the 46 is quick and that completes a mighty set of all-round attributes.

There are a few niggles: the stiff rim makes the ride firm, the width makes brake set-up an issue with some bikes and callipers, and wet braking still has a delay and modest power despite the claims made for the new Cryo-Blue Power pads. But overall, the Aero 46 is sensational.   Jamie Wilkins

Superb all-round Performance

 Tech explained Paul Lew, director of technology

 The primary aerodynamic factors that affect handling in crosswinds are pitch (when the wind creates steering input) and roll (the force that makes a bike lean over in a gust). Reynolds’ Aero line was created from scratch using proprietary CFD software and validated in the wind tunnel. In the design phase I considered all of the aerodynamic aspects that contribute to good airfoil design, not focusing only on low drag. The result was an aerodynamic contour we named Dispersive Effect Termination, DET. Regarding the stiffness, we use a hybrid carbon laminate to maximize stiffness in each region. For example: the spoke face, sidewall, brake track and clincher bed all use different carbon fibres to maximise stiffness.

Reynolds Cycling was the first company to put a carbon clincher into large-scale production. That gave them an advantage in terms of market penetration but it also meant that early adopters satisfied with their wheels didn’t necessarily progress to their newer technology. I’m beginning with this shot of the inside of the rim to show just how clean their molding is. I’ve seen a lot of carbon wheels and that level of precision at the inner wall and bead hook isn’t common.
